President of the Pharmaceutical Association of Zambia (PAZ), Keegan Mwape, has expressed concern with the abuse of Benylin by some individuals to intoxicate themselves and engage in unlawful activities.
Mr Mwape has described the development as unfortunate, noting that the misuse of medicines poses serious risks to public health and safety.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, Mr Mwape stated that the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA), which is mandated to regulate medicines that are sold or distributed to the public, is making efforts to ensure that abuse of all forms of drugs is addressed and perpetrators are brought to book.
Mr Mwape added that members of the association are also vigilant and highly trained professionals who ensure medicines are dispensed in accordance with established guidelines.
He warned that the abuse of medicines such as Benylin can lead to serious health complications when used outside medical instructions.
Mr Mwape has therefore advised the general public, especially those involved in drug abuse, to avoid or abstain from the practice to protect their health.
Benylin is a brand name of medicine used for symptomatic relief of a cough, cold, and flu.
Some Benylin products can also treat pain and diarrhoea.
