KANENE CALLS FOR MEDIA ETHICS

Veteran journalist Oliver Kanene has called on journalists in Zambia to uphold professionalism, ethics and integrity as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.

Mr Kanene said journalists have a critical responsibility to contribute to peace, democracy, and credible elections through balanced and ethical reporting.

Speaking ahead of the 2026 World Press Freedom Day celebrations and the World Press Freedom Day Global Conference to be hosted in Zambia, Mr Kanene noted that journalism remains a challenging profession that requires courage, responsibility, and accountability.

He said while press freedom has evolved significantly from the one-party state era, journalists must continue fighting for space to operate professionally and independently.

Mr Kanene explained that unlike in previous decades when journalists faced harassment with little support, today there are organisations that defend media freedoms and promote journalists’ rights.

He further stated that the current environment allows for more engagement between government and the media, citing increased interaction between journalists and political leaders.

Mr Kanene, however, warned young journalists against compromising their integrity through political influence, gifts, or biased reporting.

He urged upcoming journalists to remain informed, ethical, and committed to serving the public interest.

And Mr Kanene has encouraged greater collaboration between veteran and young journalists, saying experienced media practitioners still have valuable lessons to share with the next generation.

He also called for improved journalism training in higher learning institutions to help young reporters adapt to emerging trends such as digital storytelling, misinformation, and the use of Artificial Intelligence in newsrooms.

Meanwhile, Mr Kanene says Zambia should take pride in hosting the World Press Freedom Day Global Conference, describing it as an opportunity for local journalists to learn from international media practitioners and strengthen journalism standards in the country.
