Lusaka, June 12, 2025, ZANIS— Government has launched a multisectoral National Action Plan (NAP) to address the rising public health threat posed by antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

National Coordinator for Antimicrobial Resistance, Joseph Chizimu, said the plan which spans from 2017 to 2027, follows a One Health approach, which acknowledges the interconnection between human, animal, agriculture, and environmental health in tackling AMR.

Dr. Chizimu said the plan is designed to address the root causes of AMR and promote a comprehensive and sustainable response to the growing health challenge.

“The National Action Plan covers six key focus areas: awareness and education, surveillance and research, regulation, infection prevention, sanitation and hygiene, optimized drug use, and investment in research and development,” Dr. Chizimu explained.

ReAct Africa Executive Director, Mirfin Mpundu, said the main objective of the NAP is to offer a structured framework for managing AMR in Zambia.

Professor Mpundu emphasized that antimicrobial resistance has become a serious public health concern in Zambia, with some microorganisms showing resistance to available treatments.

“The plan aims to tackle the threat of AMR through a multisectoral strategy, engaging stakeholders from various sectors,” said Professor Mpundu.
