Chinsali, June 12, 2025, ZANIS— Acting Chinsali District Commissioner (DC) Brenda Silwembe says Government recognises the challenges posed by some damaged parts of the Great North Road.

Speaking during a consultative meeting on the Great North Road Refurbishment Project in Chinsali yesterday, Ms. Silwembe noted that the Government remains dedicated to upgrading the remaining stretches on Great North Road as it is a relevant infrastructure to Zambia`s vision for development.

ZANIS reports that Ms Silwembe said so far part of the Great North Road on a stretch between Nakonde and Chinsali in Muchinga Province has been worked on.

The Acting DC adds that efforts to upgrade the Chinsali-Mpika stretch along the Great North Road that is in a deplorable state are underway.

“As Government we are committed to restoring road safety and sanity for our people,” Ms Silwembe said.

And the Great North Road Refurbishment Project Local Campaign Manager- Communication, Chamilesu Kapaipi has disclosed that upgrading of the Chinsali-Mpika stretch   has been co-financed by the European Investment Bank and European Union.

Ms Kapaipi said the road project which was currently at procurement stage will cover the upgrade of 162 Km of the Chinsali-Mpika stretch and rehabilitation of 50km of feeder roads within the project coverage area.

She further said that sensitisation activities prior commencement of the road works will commence in the next one month.

During the consultative meeting stakeholders made various submissions concerning the Great North Road Refurbishment Project.
