SOLWEZI FEMALE TRADERS THRIVE THROUGH SMALL-SCALE ENTERPRISES
A cross-section of women traders in Solwezi main and Kyawama markets say empowering oneself through small-scale businesses has enabled many women to become self-reliant, support their families and gain self-confidence.
As the country prepares to commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, women entrepreneurs in Solwezi markets have called on fellow women to embrace self-reliance and financial independence.
The women said this in an interview in Solwezi today ahead of this year’s International Women’s Day commemoration which falls on March 8th.
The women noted that engaging in trading activities even with modest start-up capital had helped them reduce dependence on others while improving household welfare.
One of the traders, Melan Kahyata who deals in second-hand clothes said self-empowerment had helped her remain resilient despite the challenges associated with market trading.
“As women we need to empower ourselves like what I do.
I buy and sell salaula, and through this business I am able to provide for my family, even when we don’t have mealie meal at home,” she said.
Another trader, Esther Mulopu said the business she started with a small amount of money has steadily grown and transformed her family’s livelihood.
Meanwhile, Solwezi Main Market chairlady Judith Njombi said women in markets face numerous challenges, including the responsibility of caring for orphans and extended families.
This year’s International Women’s Day commemoration which falls on March 8th is being held under the theme,”Right.Justuce.Action.For Women and Girls,”.
