Kansanshi Mining PLC has taken the lead in the construction of a modern racing track at Solwezi Stadium in a move aimed at strengthening sports development in Solwezi District.
The project, which is being implemented at a cost of USD800, 000 under the mine’s corporate social responsibility programme is expected to improve sporting infrastructure and provide a platform for young athletes to nurture their talent.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS yesterday, Kansanshi Foundation Manager Simon Keevil said the initiative is part of the mine’s commitment to supporting community development beyond mining operations.
Mr Keevil disclosed that the project will comprise a racing track, ablution blocks, and shelters, among other amenities.
He said that the new racing track was expected to benefit schools, sports clubs, and community groups by providing a safe and standard facility for training and competitions.
Mr Keevil said the track will help Solwezi District host major sporting events and attract athletes from other parts of the country, thereby boosting the country’s economy.
He added that the facility will create opportunities for talent identification and professional growth among young people.
Once completed, the racing track is expected to position the district as a key sporting hub in North Western Province.
