The Zambia Meteorological Department (ZMD) has announced that the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), the country’s main rain-bearing system, is currently positioned across central Zambia and is expected to shift southwards within the next 24 hours.
In its Weather Alert and Advisory valid from February 10 to 20, ZMD also disclosed that Tropical Storm Gezani, located over the southwest Indian Ocean, is forecast to make landfall in Madagascar before moving into the Mozambique Channel by February 11.
The storm is expected to interact with the ITCZ, creating warm and unstable atmospheric conditions that will trigger widespread rainfall, with heavy downpours anticipated between February 12 and 14.
ZANIS reports that ZMD has cautioned that flood-prone areas, particularly low-lying and poorly drained regions, face a high risk of flash floods.
The public has been urged to take precautionary measures, avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges and motorists have been advised to exercise caution when driving in wet conditions.
