GOVERNMENT REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR FLOOD VICTIMS

Lusaka District Commissioner Rosa Kayuni has reaffirmed government’s commitment to partnering with stakeholders and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to support flood-affected communities across Lusaka.

Ms Kayuni said this during the distribution of relief supplies donated by IK Charitable Trust to 100 households in Makeni Villa Ward of Kanyama Constituency and Chunga, with 68 beneficiaries from Makeni Villa and 32 from Chunga.

She disclosed that the donated items included 100 single mattresses, 200 blankets, granular and liquid chlorine, and assorted foodstuffs such as mealie meal, rice, beans, soya pieces, cooking oil, and salt.

Ms Kayuni expressed delight that various stakeholders had converged in Makeni Villa to support vulnerable families who have suffered the effects of flooding in several parts of the city.

She noted that Makeni Villa was among the areas that experienced severe flooding, adding that two weeks ago, the Provincial Permanent Secretary visited the area and led an operation aimed at draining the floodwaters.

“On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Zambia, I wish to thank IK Charitable Trust for this huge and timely donation to our vulnerable community members. The choice of supplies is very appropriate to the prevailing situation in the households of the beneficiaries,” she said.

Meanwhile, IK Charitable Trust Administrative Officer, Mohammed Bilal Mansur said the organisation will continue working with government to supplement its efforts in ensuring the well-being of community members.
