A 29-year-old man in Mpika District of Muchinga Province has committed suicide by hanging himself from a mango tree.
The development has been confirmed to ZANIS by Muchinga Province Police Commissioner, Dennis Moola, today.
Mr Moola has identified the deceased person as Peter Chileshe aged 29, of Kamwanya area in Chikwanda chiefdom.
He disclosed that the deceased decided to commit suicide by hanging himself from a mango tree using a wire at his elder brother’s house, where he was staying.
The Muchinga Police Chief added that preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased person started quarreling with his neighbour after coming from a drinking spree at a nearby place around 03:00 hours today.
Mr Moola further disclosed that after a serious quarrel with his neighbours, Mr Chileshe was counseled and advised to go and sleep by his elder brother identified as Martin Chileshe, aged 37, but he could not listen.
He added that after the older brother of the deceased saw that his younger brother was not listening to his advice, he left him outside and went to sleep.
Mr Moola said, “Unfortunately, at 05:00 hours, the elder brother of the deceased was woken up by one of his neighbours who told him that his young brother had committed suicide at a mango tree within their own yard.
Mr Moola further disclosed that the matter was reported to Mpika Police Station by the elder brother of the deceased at around 06:38 today.
He said acting on the report, police officers visited the scene and the findings were that the deceased’s body was found hanging to a mango tree within the yard using a wire.
Mr Moola said the deceased’s body has been physically inspected and was found with a protruding tongue and bruises on the neck.
The body has since been deposited in Mpika Urban Clinic Mortuary awaiting burial as no foul play was suspected.
Meanwhile, Mpika District Commissioner, David Siame, has advised the community not to commit suicide no matter the situation they are faced with.
“It is very sad that a young man has died in such a manner,” he said.
