GOVERNMENT COMMITTED TO RESPOND TO DISEASE OUTBREAKS

Government says it remains actively engaged in responding to ongoing outbreaks of Cholera, Measles, Polio and Mpox in the country.

Minister of Health, Elijah Muchima said this when he addressed the media on the current public health situation, noting that sustained interventions are being implemented to protect public health and contain the spread of diseases.

ZANIS reports that Dr Muchima said a cumulative total of 639 cholera cases has been recorded since the outbreak was first detected in August 2025, with 614 recoveries and ten deaths.

He added that the most recent death was recorded on January 12, 2026, in Nakonde District.

Dr Muchima explained that the outbreak has been largely concentrated in Northern Province, particularly Mpulungu, Nsama and Senga Hill districts, which have collectively reported over 501 cases, accounting for 80% percent of all cases nationwide.

He further stated that other affected provinces include Southern Province with 44 cases, Copperbelt 37, Lusaka 41, Muchinga 8, North-Western 5 and Central Province 2 cases, respectively.

He also disclosed that no Cholera cases have been recorded in Luapula, Western or Eastern Provinces.

Dr Muchima revealed that there are currently 17 patients under admission in Lusaka district, receiving treatment at local health facilities including Chipata Level One Hospital, Kalingaliga and Mutendere, among others.

He said his Ministry has enhanced surveillance and preparedness measures, while cholera treatment centers and oral rehydration points remain operational to contain the outbreak.

Dr Muchima has noted that the country continues to maintain strong surveillance for polio through research and environmental sampling.

He further highlighted that over 2,000 suspected cases have been tested since the first confirmed cases were reported.

Dr Muchima also disclosed that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has since announced an end to Mpox as a public health emergency of international concern.
