The Ministry of Health in Limulunga District has expressed concern over rising floods that have significantly hindered access to health facilities in parts of Western Province.
Limulunga District Health Director, Mwilaba Mundia, says the flooding has negatively affected the delivery of quality healthcare and social services to several communities.
He disclosed this when a team from the United Nations Population Fund, paid a courtesy call on him at his office, noting that some pregnant women are forced to travel for up to three hours by canoe to reach the nearest health facilities.
Meanwhile, Maternal and Child Health Coordinator Anthony Phiri said poor road network connectivity, especially in the Barotse Flood Plains, has contributed to rising maternal mortality rates in the district.
Mr Phiri has since appealed to the United Nations Population Fund to help implement temporary health interventions to improve access to essential services.
Meanwhile, United Nations Population Fund Commodities and Logistics Officer Bright Mhango said the organization remains committed to improving the health of people in Western Province.
