Mungwi farmers cautioned on unscrupulous buyers

Sub-Chief Mfungo of Mungwi District in Northern Province has warned his subjects against selling their farm produce to unscrupulous buyers at a low price.

Sub-Chief Mfungo says farmers should be wary of briefcase buyers who might take advantage of them as they are harvesting their crops by buying their produce at a low price.

He said farmers should not be lured to sell their maize to briefcase buyers but wait until the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) announces the price.

The traditional leader made the remarks through his representative, Emmanual Mfungo during this year’s District Agriculture, Tourism and Investment show held in Ngoli area.

“Currently, we have a lot of briefcase buyers coming to lure farmers into buying their farm produce at a cheaper price in the area, farmers should be wary of such,” he said.

He further cautioned people not to sell all their produce to avoid hunger in the area.

The Sub-chief explained that farmers should ensure they reserve enough stock for home consumption and only sell the surplus.

The traditional leader observed that the area has over the years been recording increased crop production due to favourable rainfall patterns and good climatic conditions.

The traditional leader also encouraged farmers to embrace smart agricultural practices to mitigate the effects of climate change.
