GOVT. SIGNS MOU WITH BAROTSE AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY

Government and the Barotse Agricultural Development Company (BADC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at revolutionizing the livestock and ecosystem landscape in Western Province.

The MoU forms a basis and strategic framework for the Barotse Rangeland Restoration Project, a 40-year initiative targeting the restoration of 1.2 million hectares of land across Mongu, Limulunga, Senanga, Nalolo, and Kalabo districts.

Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Peter Kapala, Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary (PS) Douty Chibamba signed on behalf of the Zambian Government while Barotse Royal Establishment Ngambela Mukela Manyando, BADC Representative Munalula Lisimba, and Pro Green Earth Chief Executive Officer Van Vuuren signed on behalf of their institutions.

Mr Kapala said the MoU is a decisive intervention that will unlock the Western Province’s agricultural potential and position Zambia as a global leader in sustainable beef and meat production.

He noted that the initiative is a dual-action approach towards mitigating carbon emissions within the livestock sector.

“This partnership will help restore our land while simultaneously uplifting the lives of our farmers. As we sign this document, let us remain steadfast in our shared mission to bring sustainable prosperity to the very doorsteps of our communities,” Mr Kapala said.

And speaking earlier, Pro Green Earth CEO, Van Vuuren disclosed that the project will benefit over 400,000 people in the region.

Barotse Royal Establishment Prime Minister, Mukela Manyando expressed gratitude that poverty levels would be reduced significantly from 80 percent to 60 percent.
