MENTAL HEALTH EXPERTS URGE ACTION ON YOUTH CRISIS

MENTAL health experts have called for urgent implementation of awareness campaigns and stronger regulation of social media use amidst worsened mental health crisis among youths.

Ministry of Health mental expert Gabriel Lungu has called for strengthened support systems, warning that failure to act would worsen the mental health crisis in youths.

He linked the high number of suicide cases among young people in Zambia to social media pressure and inadequate emotional support systems.

Mr Lungu explained that suicide was often a result of underlying issue such as depression, hopelessness and lack of support.

He noted that many young people relied heavily on relationships and social approval for emotional security, making them more vulnerable when faced with rejection or failure..

Meanwhile, Psychiatrist and Mental Health officer George Tafuna said home environment was expected to prepare children to handle pressure, but warned that lack of discipline and guidance has left many ill-equipped to deal with the demands of adulthood.
