PRESIDENT HICHILEMA FILES IN NOMINATIONS FOR UPND PRESIDENCY

President Hakainde Hichilema has successfully filed his nomination for the United Party for National Development (UPND) Presidency.

He was nominated by Luapula Province and backed by five others.

Among the five Provinces that backed President Hichilema’s nomination, were Copperbelt, Lusaka, North-Western, Eastern as well as Western.

Speaking after filing his nomination, President Hichilema expressed gratitude to the party for the nomination, noting that it gives him another opportunity to be able to deliver more development to the people of Zambia.

The President, whose candidature in the party has gone unopposed, has thanked UPND members for entrusting him with leadership.

The Head of State has also commended the party for successfully carrying out intra-party elections, further urging all leaders to work hard for the people of Zambia.

“We must search ourselves and work hard for the people of Zambia. When we do that, our interests will be taken care of,” the President stressed.

And speaking shortly before President Hichilema filed his nomination,  UPND Chairperson for elections, Likando Mufalali, disclosed that the party has only received one application since Presidential nominations were opened.

He said this means President Hichilema is going unopposed in the party.

Mr Mufalali has noted that the party had conducted all election processes in line with its constitution.

“UPND is one of the parties that do primary elections starting from the lowest order, in this case starting at branch all the way to the NMC,” he stressed.

He explained that UPND had already carried out elections at district, constituency and provincial levels, with Sunday, April 12th, 2026, marking the last day for Presidential nominations.

Mr Mufalali assured that the Presidential nomination process was transparent and verified by independent entities, such as Non-governmental Organisations and other stakeholders.

And the representative of the Independent Commission, Isaac Mwanza, confirmed receipt of President Hichilema’s nomination and certified that it meets all requirements.
