PRESIDENT HICHILEMA URGES UNILUS TO PROMOTE ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAMMES

President Hakainde Hichilema  has challenged University of Lusaka to develop programmes that promote various innovations, stating that government is committed to providing an environment that allows the young entrepreneurs to thrive.

Speaking during the official opening of the University of Lusaka (UNILUS) Silverest Campus and Hospital, President Hichilema commended the institution on its investment in education, which has the potential of making it a world class university.

ZANIS reports that Mr Hichilema further encouraged increased cooperation between the private and public sector that can lead to effective utilisation of private sector infrastructure, such as its hospital through close cooperation with the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

“We have 65% excess capacity at UNILUS Hospital that is not being utilised, but that space is needed for other public hospitals, why not create a strategic relationship?” said the President.

He also encouraged entrepreneurs to take advantage of the government’s vision to produce 10 thousands megawatts of power, through solar investment and power purchase agreements that can transform homes into small businesses.

President Hichilema also noted that government has continued to simplify procedures such as power purchase agreements and reduced regulatory burden by the Zambia Environmental Management Authority (ZEMA).

The Head of State also highlighted key initiatives such as Digital Identification that will allow locals to visit Namibia without a Visa, thereby promoting marketing and networking opportunities for business growth.

University of Lusaka (UNILUS) Chancellor, Caleb Fundanga, recognised the government’s commitment to human capital development, through access to education and empowerment for the young people.

Dr Fundanga added that debt restructuring has allowed communities to thrive and participate in economic development activities.

And, Vice Chancellor of the University, Pinalo Chifwanakeni, commended the government for its support towards provision of land and civic leadership that reflect a shared commitment to quality education.

Prof Chifwanakeni also praised the government on the local content policy that has opened investment opportunities for the local people.

He further expressed his institutional belief that education must enable students to participate in economic activities such as mining.

UNILUS Medical Student Association President, Emmanuel Kasomo, called on President Hichilema to extend financial assistance to the private sector, in order to promote equity and access to education for all.

He also called for a reduction in students’ study permits, in order to make education more accessible in the region and transform the country to an education hub.

Mr Kasomo said the presence of the President at the institution is a firm reminder that learners are valued and included in national matters.
