Vice President Mutale Nalumango has underscored the natural role of women as defenders and protectors of society.

Mrs Nalumango has recognised the significant contributions of women in defence and security, describing their work as strategic and that of excellence.

Speaking at the first-ever Defence and Security Services Women Gala Dinner, last evening, Mrs Nalumango expressed satisfaction that the defence and security women’s efforts to the nation brings a vital element to the fabric of society.

“Zambian women have risen to the occasion, taking on responsibilities previously dominated by men,” she said.

The Vice President explained that this is why the government remains committed to advancing policies that promote and advocate for women inclusion.

ZANIS reports that Mrs Nalumango also highly condemned the brutal killing of the woman who was murdered by a mob in Kalumbila recently, citing the need for women to defend and protect each other.

“What happened is un-Zambian and inhuman, she said.

The Vice President, further called on women in defence and security to defend each other as females, stating that women are not only anchors of defence but custodians of morality.

And Gender Division Permanent Secretary Mainga Kabika, highlighted that the event is responding to the government’s call for enhanced women inclusion and active participation in peace building among other security services.

Ms Kabika acknowledged the importance of gender mainstreaming, particularly in defence and security.

Earlier in her welcome remarks, Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Mwizukanji Namwawa, noted that the women’s gala was born from a powerful conviction that women who defend, protect and secure the nation must be seen, recognised and celebrated.

Brigadier General Namwawa also noted that, for far too long, contributions from women have been spread across various institutions.

During the gala dinner, Retired female members were awarded while outstanding female personnel and male champions were honoured for their exceptional work.
