SMART ZAMBIA INSTITUTE HOLDS INTERNET DAY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

Smart Zambia Institute, has hosted an Internet Day awareness campaign at Kamulanga Secondary School in Lusaka aimed at promoting responsible and safe use of the internet among learners.

Speaking at the event, Smart Zambia Institute Assistant Director for Digital Skills and Capabilities, Brian Nawa, said that safety, responsibility, and inclusion must remain at the center of digital transformation, in order to promote uptake of digital government services.

He further noted that there is a rise in cybercrime, online exploitation, misinformation, identity theft, and digital harassment that poses serious threats to young people, which calls for the need for increased awareness and responsible internet usage.

ZANIS reports that Mr Nawa also described the commemoration as more than just an annual campaign, but a global call to action and a reminder that digital technologies continue to transform societies in profound ways.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Education Assistant Director for Information Technology, Edward Mushota, noted that despite the internet offering vast opportunities for research, innovation, and communication, it also comes with risks such as cyberbullying, identity theft, online scams, and exposure to harmful content.

Mr Mushota further urged learners to respect others in the digital space, safeguard their personal information, and remain mindful that their digital footprint is permanent and can have long-term consequences.

Smart Zambia Institute Cyber Security Officer, Sipho Inambao, cautioned that the internet can expose users to harmful information and negative influences that has the power to build or destroy the future of learners.

Mr Inambao, however, urged learners to be cautious online, emphasising that respect, privacy, and critical thinking are essential values for navigating the digital world safely and responsibly.

Kamulanga Secondary School Headteacher, Martha Mwanapabu, who was represented by the Deputy Head Teacher, Oliver Mukuwe, expressed gratitude to Smart Zambia and the Ministry of Education for selecting the school to host the Internet Day Awareness campaign.
