Radiation Protection Authority (RPA) has held a high-level dialogue meeting with the Ministry of Information and Media, aimed at deepening understanding of the nuclear technology regulatory framework in the country.
ZANIS reports that speaking during the meeting in Lusaka, Ministry of Information and Media, Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana says that his Ministry is committed to ensuring that accurate, and well-structured information reaches the public.
Mr Kawana added that public awareness and transparency are critical pillars in building trust and ensuring that there is national support towards the nuclear programme.
“The Ministry stands ready to work with the Radiation Protection Authority and all the relevant institutions as we advance this important national agenda,” added Mr Kawana.
He added that it is important to develop a strong and coordinated national infrastructure as the country embarks on a nuclear power programme, as a key enabler of energy diversification and social economic transformation.
Meanwhile, Radiation Protection Authority Executive Director, Boster Siwila, said that his institution embarked on meeting with policymakers and permanent secretaries in order to mobilise support for the project.
Dr Siwila added that the Radiation Authority will leverage on the Ministry of Information and Media to convince and show the public what is relevant in its mandate.
Two years ago, the government announced that it is ready to use nuclear science and technology for peaceful means aimed at addressing some of the country’s challenges such as the drought that has affected the nation.
