The opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD)’s Bright Nundwe has scooped the Chawama Parliamentary election in Lusaka district.
FDD candidate Bright Nundwe polled 8,085 votes, defeating his closest rival, Morgan Muunda of the ruling UPND, who amassed 6,542 votes.
ZANIS reports that Davison Mulenga who stood on the Citizens First Party ticket, got 1,534 votes, while independent candidate George Mwenya followed with 466 votes.
Another independent candidate, Elijah Siatawambo, garnered 428 votes.
Mohammad Mutete of the New Congress Party received 319 votes, while Alfred Ndiweni of the Exodus Party for Peace and Prosperity (EPPP) collected 239 votes.
Ntazana Musukuma of the Liberation Movement managed 100 votes, and James Phiri of the National Democratic Congress closed the list with 93 votes.
Chawama Constituency Returning Officer, Lewis Lupando said a total of 18,096 votes were casted in the by-election, with 290 ballot papers rejected as invalid.
“I declare Bright Nundwe of the FDD party as a duly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Chawama constituency effective 16 January, 2026,” Mr Lupando stated.
Mr Nundwe is expected to take up his seat in the National Assembly when the House, which is on recess, resumes in February next month.
The declaration was witnessed by polling agents, monitors representing various political parties and organisations, law enforcement officers, the media, as well as Electoral Commission of Zambia staff.
Celebrations erupted among Nundwe’s supporters shortly after the announcement, signifying what some observers view as a shift in voter sentiment within Chawama.
Meanwhile, Acting PF President Given Lubinda said Nundwe’s victory marks a notable achievement for the FDD in a constituency where competition is often dominated by larger political parties.
Mr Lubinda, who is acting Tonse Alliance Chairperson, thanked the campaign team for their tireless and spirited fight in a contest that attracted national attention due to the constituency’s political symbolism and history.
And newly elected Chawama MP, Bright Nundwe, a former Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary in the Patriotic Front administration, pledged to continue developing the constituency.
The Chawama Parliamentary seat fell vacant following the prolonged absence of the former Member of Parliament, Tasila Lungu.
Anti-Violence Association of Zambia Chairperson, Richard Kakuwa in a separate interview, encouraged the opposition and ruling UPND to embrace love and unity, noting that Zambia is known for peace, not violence.
