Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD) National Coordinator Norman Chipakupaku says traditional approaches to disaster risk management are no longer sufficient in the face of increasing frequency and intensity of disasters in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Chipakupaku has noted that there is need for precise and localised risk information to guide policies, planning, budgeting, early warning systems and humanitarian response in disaster risk management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe recognise that disasters do not respect national borders. Effective disaster risk management therefore requires strong regional collaboration, data sharing, coordinated planning and continuous support among our nations,\u201d said Mr Chipakupaku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Chipakupaku was speaking today during the official opening of the fourth and final INFORM sub-national risk model workshop, organised by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), in Lusaka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And Urban Resilience Coordinator for the African Union Commission (AUC) Valery Yao narrated that AU member states often face overlapping disasters which threaten reform mechanisms and resources to a breaking point as coping strategies designed for one hazard are rendered ineffective when another strikes at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also present at the event, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident representative James Wakiaga advised that disaster risk reduction cannot remain confined to emergency response as it must shape how countries plan development, manage infrastructure, protect economies and safeguard communities. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
