Government has launched a 3.6 million United States Dollars initiative aimed at strengthening Zambia\u2019s meteorological capabilities and improving preparedness for extreme weather events such as droughts and floods.<\/p>\n
The Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF) initiative, is being implemented by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in partnership with the Zambia Meteorological Department (ZMD) and the United Kingdom\u2019s Meteorology Office.<\/p>\n
Speaking during the launch of the SOFF initiative in Lusaka today, Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary, Doubty Chibamba, says the project is a major step towards enhancing Zambia\u2019s climate resilience agenda.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe SOFF project is not just an infrastructure upgrade, it is a strategic investment in our national security. To transition to a green economy, our policies must be rooted in precise, reliable and real-time climate data,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, World Food Programme (WFD) Country Director, Cissy Kabasuuga stressed that accurate climate information is key to strengthening disaster preparedness and protecting vulnerable communities from the effects of extreme weather shocks.<\/p>\n
And Zambia Meteorological Department Director, Edson Nkonde in a speech read on his behalf by Meteorological Department Acting Assistant Director, Micah Tembo explained that the project will help close critical climate data gaps that currently affect forecasting accuracy in the country.<\/p>\n
