Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Kennedy Lishimpi says Zambia\u2019s successful debt restructuring programme has created significant fiscal space that has enabled government to increase investment in critical sectors such as health, education and social protection.<\/p>\n
According to a press statement made available to ZANIS by Ministry of Health Head of Communications and Public Relations, Jacqueline Sitali, Dr\u00a0Lishimpi has noted that the debt restructuring process has resulted in substantial savings enabling the government to redirect some funds towards programmes aimed at improving citizens\u2019 wellbeing and accelerating national development.<\/p>\n
Dr Lishimpi explained that among the major gains realised are the expansion of free education, enhancement of school feeding programmes, increased support to the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) and enhanced Constituency Development Fund (CDF).<\/p>\n
He further noted that Zambia has increased funding to the health sector from K1.6 Billion in 2021 to K26 Billion in 2026, while the medicine budget has risen from K4.9 Billion in 2025 to K6.4 Billion in 2026.<\/p>\n
The Permanent Secretary was speaking during a side event dubbed \u201c Health Financing Dialogue 3: Health Financing Civil Society Perspective on the Path to 2023 held on the sidelines of the ongoing Seventy-ninth World Health Assembly (WHA97) in Geneva, Switzerland.<\/p>\n
