A retired civil servant, has called on serving civil servants to adopt practical financial and social coping strategies and prepare for retirement early enough.<\/p>\n
Gershom Mpundu says retirement comes with stress and requires adequate planning, noting that he is currently four years into retirement and understands the challenges involved.<\/p>\n
Mr Mpundu told ZANIS in an interview that it important to start saving consistently from one\u2019s earnings, stating that financial discipline during active service was key to ensuring a stable life after retirement.<\/p>\n
He observed a recurring problem in the public service, where many retirees received their benefits as a single lump-sum payment and exhaust it within a few months on non-essential expenditures.<\/p>\n
Mr Mpundu noted that the trend often left retirees financially vulnerable and struggling to sustain their livelihoods in the years that follow.<\/p>\n
He urged workers to venture into income-generating activities while still in employment, adding that relying solely on a salary can leave individuals vulnerable once they exit formal employment.<\/p>\n
