Government has\u00a0announced plans to recruit more than 30 000 teachers next year in 2027.<\/p>\n
Minister of Education, Douglas Syakalima disclosed this at a press briefing in Lusaka, where he announced the commencement of the recruitment of 2,000 teachers for the year 2025.<\/p>\n
Mr Syakalima further assured that government is yet to employ 3,500 more teachers for the 2026 recruitment.<\/p>\n
He explained that out of the 2,000 teachers being recruited now, 92 will be deployed to early childhood education, 565 to primary schools, and 1,343 to secondary schools, with 10 percent of the positions allocated to persons with disabilities.<\/p>\n
Mr Syakalima also indicated that the recruitment exercise will prioritise candidates trained in mathematics, sciences, ICT, Zambian languages, and practical subjects, to support the new competence-based curriculum.<\/p>\n
And the Minister has disclosed with disappointment, that about a quarter of the previously recruited 30, 000 teachers abandoned their stations.<\/p>\n
Mr Syakalima has attributed the delay in the 2025 recruitment to the human resource audit of teachers, clarifying that government was taking stock of abandoned positions in rural areas.<\/p>\n
He stated that the Teaching Service Commission is expected to publish the recruitment advertisement tomorrow, Tuesday, April 21, 2026, with applications closing on April 27, 2026.<\/p>\n
At the same meeting, Teaching Service Commission Chairperson, Daphne Chimuka highlighted that the process will be anchored on a digitalised recruitment system developed in collaboration with the Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ)<\/p>\n
