{"id":3713,"date":"2026-04-18T16:27:33","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T14:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zanis.gov.zm\/?p=3713"},"modified":"2026-04-18T16:37:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T14:37:47","slug":"president-hichilema-mourns-uncle-calls-for-road-safety-measures-in-monze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zanis.gov.zm\/?p=3713","title":{"rendered":"PRESIDENT HICHILEMA MOURNS UNCLE, CALLS FOR ROAD SAFETY MEASURES IN MONZE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Hakainde Hichilema yesterday attended the burial of his uncle, Mr Maxwell Hichilema, in Mooya area of Himalambe Village in Monze District, Southern Province, and used the solemn occasion to call for enhanced road safety following a rise in fatal motorbike accidents in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Maxwell Hichilema, who died on April 12, 2026, was involved in a fatal motorbike accident along the Monze\u2013Niko Road at Mooya Junction.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the burial, President Hichilema consoled the bereaved family and urged them to accept the loss as part of God\u2019s will.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLosing a father, uncle or relative is a painful experience, but we must accept God\u2019s will and mourn him in peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Head of State described the late Mr Hichilema as a hardworking, courageous and disciplined leader who valued order in the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis death is a great loss to the family, the community, the party and the nation at large. God gives life and God takes life,\u201d President Hichilema said.<\/p>\n<p>The late Mr Hichilema served as UPND Chairperson for Bweengwa Ward and was also Senior Headman Himalambe.<\/p>\n<p>President Hichilema, who was accompanied by First Lady Mutinta Hichilema, expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents, particularly those involving motorbikes in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis road was built to ease your travel and not to kill people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He urged all road users, including motorists, cyclists, and motorbike riders, to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOx carts, bicycles, motorbike riders and motorists, let us move properly on the road. Road users must be attentive to what is happening around them. Please stop over-speeding and observe traffic rules,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The President attributed the accident that claimed his uncle\u2019s life to negligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe accident which killed my uncle was purely due to negligence. How can you kill a person you can clearly see in front of you?\u201d he questioned.<\/p>\n<p>He has since directed the Ministry of Infrastructure to install a roundabout at Niko Junction and speed humps at various junctions to enhance road safety.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Chief Hamusonde of Bweengwa Chiefdom described the late Mr Hichilema as a dependable traditional leader who dedicated his life to serving his people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have lost one of our dependable headmen, a true son of the soil. He was born here in Bweengwa and has been laid to rest here.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He served as an adjudicator and headman with distinction,\u201d the traditional leader said.<\/p>\n<p>Area Member of Parliament Michelo Kasauta also called on residents to exercise caution on the roads, noting the alarming number of fatalities linked to motorbike accidents in the constituency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo many lives are being lost due to motorbike accidents.
