The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has announced the newly created 70 constituencies and wards, bringing the total of constituencies in the country to 226.<\/p>\n
The newly created constituencies and wards were announced by ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis during a media press briefing held at Mulungushi International conference centre.<\/p>\n
Mrs Zaloumis disclosed that Southern and Eastern provinces had the highest number of newly created constituencies with each province having 9 new constituencies, followed by Central province with 8 while Copperbelt, Northern, Western and North western had 7 new constituencies each.<\/p>\n
Others are Lusaka and Muchinga provinces with each having 6 new constituencies and Luapula with 5 new constituencies.<\/p>\n
Mrs Zaloumis said the newly created constituencies and wards were done in line with the Zambian constitution.<\/p>\n
She pointed out that the delimitation exercise was done in consultation with all stakeholders across the country in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n
Mrs Zaloumis says the delimitation exercise undertaken by ECZ was meant to improve representation by bringing the leadership closer to the people and also respond to changing settlement patterns, including population growth.<\/p>\n
She explained that the final delimitation process of the constituencies was done from the analysis of submissions made by districts and provinces.<\/p>\n
Mrs Zaloumis stressed that the delimitation has come from the people who participated in the stakeholders\u2019 consultative meetings.<\/p>\n
“So, the final delimitation has not come out of the blue. It has come from the people themselves.”<\/p>\n
She indicated that the submissions made in districts and provinces were verified by the people during open public meetings held in various provinces.<\/p>\n
Mrs Zaloumis said the entire delimitation process was rooted in the law, informed by citizen participation, and guided by transparency, inclusivity and impartiality.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Mrs Zaloumis pointed out that under the Constitution of Zambia Amendment number 13 of 2025 was enacted to, among other things, increase the number of constituency-based seats from 156 to 226.<\/p>\n
She explained that the reforms created the legal basis, for the creation of additional constituencies.<\/p>\n
The ECZ Chairperson stated that the reforms also placed a solemn responsibility on the Electoral Commission of Zambia to undertake the delimitation in a manner that is constitutional, transparent, and impassioned.<\/p>\n
She said consultations were conducted in all the 116 districts of Zambia prior to the delimitation exercise<\/p>\n
“In these consultations, stakeholders identified issues related to the limitation, such as surface area, remoteness, accessibility, geography, cohesiveness, population growth, history, and the practical challenges, and representation.”<\/p>\n
She reiterated that the delimitation exercise was done in a transparent, accountable and in adherence to established legal and procedural frameworks.<\/p>\n
And the Bishops Council of Zambia President Martin Silwimba commended ECZ for the smooth delimitation exercise.<\/p>\n
Bishop Silwimba implored the public to accept and embrace the newly created constituencies.<\/p>\n
He explained that the creation of new constituencies will greatly benefit communities as development has been brought closer to the people.<\/p>\n
Bishop Silwimba said the church was pleased with the manner ECZ has handled the delimitation process.<\/p>\n
