{"id":3635,"date":"2026-04-16T20:18:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T18:18:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zanis.gov.zm\/?p=3635"},"modified":"2026-04-16T20:18:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T18:18:29","slug":"govt-approves-key-reforms-to-drive-development-and-governance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zanis.gov.zm\/?p=3635","title":{"rendered":"GOVT APPROVES KEY REFORMS TO DRIVE DEVELOPMENT AND GOVERNANCE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Government has approved a wide range of policy and legislative measures aimed at strengthening national development, governance, and economic transformation following the 6th Cabinet Meeting held at State House on April 13, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting, chaired by President Hakainde Hichilema, focused on key reforms intended to enhance institutional efficiency, promote private sector participation, and safeguard Zambia\u2019s historical and developmental interests.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Information and Media,\u00a0Cornelius Mweetwa, who is also\u00a0chief government spokesperson, disclosed the decisions in a press statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mweetwa said among the major resolutions was the approval for the establishment of a new Development Finance Institution (DFI) to provide medium, and long term financing for developmental projects aligned to the National Development Plans.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the creation of the DFI will address the financing gap left by the dissolution of the Development Bank of Zambia while promoting private sector participation in development financing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new Development Finance Institution will play a pivotal role in mobilising long-term capital for critical sectors of the economy and ensure enhanced corporate governance through private sector involvement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The government spokesperson highlighted the approval of the declaration of the historic Samu Lya Moomba site in Monze District as a National Monument in order to preserve its cultural and political significance by cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis declaration will ensure the protection and proper management of a site that symbolises Zambia\u2019s liberation struggle and collective resilience,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He further disclosed that on legislative matters, Cabinet approved several Bills for introduction in Parliament, including the Electoral Process (Amendment) Bill, 2026, aimed at enhancing transparency and integrity in the electoral system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe enactment of these legislative measures will reinforce accountability, transparency and credibility in Zambia\u2019s democratic governance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0Cabinet also approved the ratification of key international aviation conventions and protocols to enhance safety and align Zambia\u2019s legal framework with global standards.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mweetwa explained that the ratifications will strengthen the country\u2019s capacity to address emerging aviation threats, including cyber risks and unlawful interference with aircraft operations.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Cabinet approved Zambia\u2019s hosting of the 2026 Global Child Nutrition Forum to be held in Lusaka, which is expected to promote collaboration in the implementation of sustainable school feeding programmes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Government has approved a wide range of policy and legislative measures aimed at strengthening national development, governance, and economic transformation following the 6th Cabinet Meeting held at State House on April 13, 2026.
