{"id":3601,"date":"2026-04-16T16:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T14:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zanis.gov.zm\/?p=3601"},"modified":"2026-04-16T16:01:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T14:01:03","slug":"govt-team-begins-consultations-on-mine-closure-guidelines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zanis.gov.zm\/?p=3601","title":{"rendered":"GOVT TEAM BEGINS CONSULTATIONS ON MINE CLOSURE GUIDELINES"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A technical team engaged by the government under the Zambia Mining and Environmental Remediation and Improvement Project (ZAMNEX) has arrived in Northwestern Province to support the development of national mine closure guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The team will consult local communities and traditional leaders to understand how mine closures may affect people whose livelihoods depend on mining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Mine Closure Work Coordinator and Senior Geologist Anna Apler said during a courtesy call on the Provincial Administration in Solwezi that inadequate mine closure planning can lead to long\u2011term environmental damage and prolonged socio\u2011economic challenges for mining\u2011dependent communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe are here in North Western Province to listen to the views of as many people as possible because mine closure may mean different things to different people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Dr Apler noted that with several mines in the province approaching mid\u2011 to late\u2011life stages, this is an opportune moment to assess how mine closure is currently planned and governed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, Northwestern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Luckson Mulumbi said mine closure planning is a critical component of mining operations.   <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A technical team engaged by the government under the Zambia Mining and Environmental Remediation and Improvement Project (ZAMNEX) has arrived in Northwestern Province to support the development of national mine closure guidelines.
