President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that free education remains a permanent feature of Zambia\u2019s development agenda.<\/p>\n
President Hichilema reiterated that free education will therefore be made law to safeguard access for generations to come.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are legislating to make free education law. In future we do not want somebody taking this office with a weird idea that you can develop a country without education,\u201d Mr Hichilema said.<\/p>\n
President Hichilema was speaking when he officially opened the 17th Session of the Non-Aligned Teachers Union of Southern Province (ANTUSA) festival held in Livingstone.<\/p>\n
He added that the government will make sure that Members of Parliament who are already beneficiaries of education themselves have no reason not\u00a0 to pass that law.<\/p>\n
The Head of State has also urged Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states to complement education with quality.<\/p>\n
And Southern Province Minister, Credo Nanjuwa, said education remains an important tool for transforming society.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is through quality education that societies are equipped with knowledge, skills and values necessary to drive innovation and economic growth,” Mr Nanjuwa said.<\/p>\n
He added that government has taken steps to ensure that no child is left behind in terms of accessing education.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Non-Aligned Teachers Union of Southern Africa (Antusa) President,\u00a0 Mkhuseli Dubula, has hailed President Hichilema for the development that is visible in Zambia’s education sector.<\/p>\n
Mr Dubula noted that the free education being offered in Zambia is evidence that the provision of quality education is possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow we know that in Zambia, free education is there, as Antusa, we are worried about quality and we know that we have a driver in you who is willing to push the education system forward,\u201d Mr Dubula said.<\/p>\n
