SOLWEZI FEMALE TRADERS THRIVE THROUGH SMALL-SCALE ENTERPRISES<\/p>\n
A cross-section of women traders in Solwezi main and Kyawama markets say empowering oneself through small-scale businesses has enabled many women to become self-reliant, support their families and gain self-confidence.<\/p>\n

As the country prepares to commemorate International Women\u2019s Day on March 8, 2026, women entrepreneurs in Solwezi markets have called on fellow women to embrace self-reliance and financial independence.<\/p>\n
The women said this in an interview in Solwezi today ahead of this year’s International Women\u2019s Day commemoration which falls on March 8th.<\/p>\n
The women noted that engaging in trading activities even with modest start-up capital had helped them reduce dependence on others while improving household welfare.<\/p>\n
One of the traders, Melan Kahyata who deals in second-hand clothes said self-empowerment had helped her remain resilient despite the challenges associated with market trading.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs women we need to empower ourselves like what I do.<\/p>\n

I buy and sell salaula, and through this business I am able to provide for my family, even when we don\u2019t have mealie meal at home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Another trader, Esther Mulopu said the business she started with a small amount of money has steadily grown and transformed her family\u2019s livelihood.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Solwezi Main Market chairlady Judith Njombi said women in markets face numerous challenges, including the responsibility of caring for orphans and extended families.<\/p>\n
