Lusaka, June 11, 2025, ZANIS<\/strong>\u00a0— The National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) has launched a smart payment platform in partnership with Ecobank, aimed at improving access to health insurance for more Zambians, especially those in the informal sector.<\/p>\n

NHIMA Director General Michael Njapau said the platform aligns with the authority\u2019s 2023\u20132026 strategic plan, which seeks to simplify processes for scheme members, particularly in payment procedures.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the launch in Lusaka, Mr Njapau described the collaboration with Ecobank as a reaffirmation of NHIMA\u2019s commitment to efficient service delivery.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis platform is a key tool to help drive the universal health coverage agenda and support a more inclusive digital future for health service delivery,\u201d Mr Njapau said.<\/p>\n

He explained that under the National Health Insurance Act No. 2 of 2018, every Zambian citizen and established resident is required to register and contribute based on their income level and ability.<\/p>\n

Mr Njapau noted that the new smart payment platform offers a reliable, convenient, and secure method for contributions to the National Health Insurance Fund.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe process enables more employers to submit returns and pay contributions with ease, which strengthens the overall collection system,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that the platform is designed to eliminate geographic and logistical barriers, increase transparency, and enhance financial accountability.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will also promote timely contributions and reduce defaults, which is critical for the sustainability of the national health insurance scheme,\u201d Mr. Njapau emphasized.<\/p>\n

MR Njapau reaffirmed NHIMA\u2019s commitment to ensuring that all eligible Zambians have access to quality healthcare regardless of their economic status.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo achieve this, we must innovate, streamline our systems, and build partnerships that bring real value to our members and the health sector,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ecobank Zambia Managing Director Aina Moore hailed the partnership as a significant milestone in advancing accessible and efficient healthcare financing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt Ecobank, we believe in innovation, inclusion, and empowerment. Today\u2019s partnership with NHIMA is a step towards seamless healthcare for all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Ms. Moore highlighted that Ecobank\u2019s advanced internet banking platform offers a secure and efficient channel for employers to remit NHIMA contributions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndividuals can also make payments through our branches and agency outlets, using this integrated solution,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

She said by integrating NHIMA contributions into its digital banking system, Ecobank is transforming the way Zambians access healthcare financing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are eliminating financial barriers and bringing healthcare access just a few clicks away,\u201d Ms. Moore said.<\/p>\n
