Minister of Information and Media Cornelius Mweetwa has held talks with his Guyanese counterpart, Kwame McCoy aimed at strengthening trade and co-operation between the two countries.
The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration in the information sector, governance, and economic development, as both nations seek to leverage their long-standing diplomatic relations.
Mr Mweetwa said Zambia and Guyana would explore opportunities for exchanging best practices, particularly in media operations and policy frameworks to improve service delivery and governance.
Mr Mweetwa was speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing UNESCO World Press Freedom day, 2026 Global conference in Lusaka.
“We are looking at exchanging reviews and discussing practices to explore opportunities available between our ministries, as well as broader governance and economic matters that can benefit our two countries,” he said.
Mr Mweetwa disclosed that Zambia has made progress in implementing frameworks, while expressing interest in learning from Guyana’s advanced approaches.
Mr Mweetwa also highlighted Zambia’s recent establishment of an embassy in Guyana as a significant step toward consolidating diplomatic ties that date back over four decades.
“The embassy, approved by Cabinet, provides Zambia with a physical presence to advance cooperation and tap into emerging opportunities,” the Minister said.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s Minister of Information Kwame McCoy welcomed Zambia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, noting that the two countries share historical ties dating back to around 1971, even prior to the formation of the Non-Aligned Movement.
“The world today pushes us to rely on each other’s strengths, best practices, and models for governance as we work towards economic sustainability and job creation,” he said.
