MWEETWA CALLS FOR BALANCED MEDIA COVERAGE

Minister of Information and Media, Cornelius Mweetwa, has urged state-owned media houses to create space for diverse and opposing views as they represent all citizens and not only the government of the day.

Mr Mweetwa also encouraged the media to provide accurate, timely, and balanced information, especially as the country approaches the 2026 General Elections, warning against the dangers of misinformation.

Speaking during the launch of the Zambia Daily Mail 2026–2030 Strategic Plan in Lusaka, Mr Mweetwa said the media plays a critical role in national development by informing, educating, and empowering citizens, as well as promoting transparency and accountability in governance.

He also encouraged the media to help citizens understand the impact of global events, such as conflicts in the Middle East, on Zambia’s economy, including fuel prices and the cost of living.

Mr Mweetwa noted that while the government has made progress in stabilising the economy through reduced inflation, improved exchange rates, and declining fuel prices, these gains remain vulnerable to global shocks.

He urged Zambia Daily Mail Limited to accelerate its digital growth and strengthen its financial sustainability as a state-owned enterprise under the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).

Speaking at the same event, Zambia Daily Mail Limited Board Chairperson, Belly Dubeka called for increased government support and enhanced capital investment to ensure the successful implementation of the institution’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan.

Mr Dubeka said the roadmap is aimed at transforming Zambia Daily Mail into a modern, innovative, and financially sustainable media house.

He noted that while the company has recorded progress through increased revenue and reduced operational costs, more efforts are needed to strengthen its financial position and long-term sustainability.

Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) Chief Executive Officer, Cornwell Muleya, who was represented by IDC Head of Portfolio for Tourism, Infrastructure and Services, Longowe Longwani, said the corporation will continue supporting Zambia Daily Mail to meet its strategic transformation goals.
