LOW ADOPTION OF CLIMATE-RESILIENT CROPS WORRIES KASEMPA FOOD SECURITY COMMITTEE

The Kasempa District Food Security Committee has expressed concern over the low adoption rate of crops such as sorghum by Food Security Pack (FSP) beneficiaries in the district.

Committee Secretary Suzyo Mtonga, disclosed that there is a low adoption rate of climate-resilient crops such as sorghum among farmers.

Mr Mtonga said this during the District Food Security Committee meeting held in Kasempa District in North-Western Province.

He noted that despite beneficiaries receiving training on the cultivation and benefits of climate-resilient crops such as sorghum, resistance to adoption remained high.

“Farmers are not fully applying the knowledge gained from the training despite efforts by the department to promote supplementary crops such as sorghum.

What we have found on the ground is that the adoption of sorghum cultivation among beneficiaries is very low,” he said

Mr Mtonga has since implored various stakeholders to support the department in raising awareness on the importance of adopting climate-resilient crops.

He added that increased adoption of crops such as sorghum was critical to enhancing food security and building resilience among farmers in Kasempa District.
