GOVERNMENT BOOSTS 24-HOUR ECONOMY IMPLEMENTATION

The government has announced that it is putting in place key foundational measures aimed at supporting the gradual implementation of the recently announced 24-hour economy.

Speaking during an interview with Diamond TV, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Chipoka Mulenga says that the government will prioritise lifting the night ban on truck movements, which is critical to continuity of business.

“Once these commercial truckers, buses start moving, then our small and medium enterprises and other people can go and order their products in the night and sell during the day,” said Mr Mulenga.

He also said that the government is working on addressing key drivers of night accidents such as bad road infrastructure, lack of signages that necessitated a night ban of trucks and passenger vehicles.

“We are investing heavily in facilities to make sure there’s no fatigue, there’s signages on the road, we improve the road infrastructure so that the wheels of the economy can continue moving,” he said.

Mr Mulenga also said that the government has been prioritising a continuous recruitment of police officers that will be part of security personnel for the public as they go about their night business.

Mr Mulenga urged the public to embrace the economy as one of the effective ways of earning more money and creating more jobs that result in a strengthened economy.

Government announced a 24-hour economy this month, in a bid to stimulate economic activity, improve service delivery and create opportunities for businesses and workers across the country.
