LUANGWA TO HEIGHTEN SURVEILLANCE AGAINST POLIO

LUANGWA District is set to conduct an immunisation exercise against Oral Polio Virus (OPV), targeting children below the age of five.

District Clinical Care Officer, Mwangala Ikabongo, says the immunisation expected to  run from 24th to 27th March 2026, will be administered orally using a door to door method.

And District Health Promotions Officer, Dasty Mungoni said the exercise has been necessitated following cases of Polio recently recorded in Lusaka from the samples collected at Manchinchi Sewerage Plant.

Mr Mungoni was speaking at a stakeholders’ orientation meeting held at the council chamber.

“The polio virus was not detected from a human being but the environment in December 2025 making us heighten our surveillance in order to avoid any possible outbreak in Luangwa,” he said.

He explained that Polio can be contracted from ingesting fecal matter and from contact to contact hence the decision by the Ministry of Health in February 2026 to immunise all children that are vulnerable to the disease.
