The Chisamba Magistrate Court has put on defence a 27-year-old man accused of stealing 50 metres of electric cables valued at K5,000 from his employer.
Magistrate Litungi placed Joseph Nyimba on his defence after the state established a prima facie case, following the close of the prosecution’s submissions.
Mbewe is charged with one count of theft by servant.
Particulars of the offence are that Mbewe, a general worker at Nyimba Estate Farm, stole 50 metres of electric cables valued at K5,000 from his employer on February 12, 2026.
During the trial, four witnesses, including three fellow workers and the arresting officer, produced a partially burnt cable the suspect allegedly stole as evidence.
The court heard that at around 21:00 hours on the material day, a security guard alerted management after noticing smoke and fire coming from the shed.
The court further heard that the company’s Chief Security Officer was alerted, prompting him to rush to the scene, where 50 metres of electrical cable, partially burnt allegedly by the accused inside the shed was recovered.
The Chief Security Officer later apprehended the suspect and handed him over to Landless Corner Police Post, where he was formally charged.
The court has adjourned the matter to March 25, 2026, for defence while the accused is currently out on police bond.
