WOMEN TRADERS URGED TO EMBRACE FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE

As the country prepares to commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, women entrepreneurs in local markets have called on fellow women to embrace self-reliance and financial independence.

A cross-section of women traders in Lusaka said empowering oneself through small-scale businesses has helped them support their families and gain confidence

“My business helps me take my children to school, pay house rent and feed them.” She said.

“As women we need to empower ourselves like what I do. I buy and sell charcoal, and through this business I am able to provide for my family, even when we don’t have mealie meal at home,” Hilda Soko, a charcoal trader, said.

Meanwhile, Eunice Munachonga, who trades in second-hand clothes (salaula), said self-empowerment has helped her remain resilient despite business challenges.

Ms Munachonga appealed for increased government support through skills training and empowerment funds.

And Local Government Gender Equality Committee Chairperson, Mrs Annie Kalamatila, said empowerment programmes were available through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
