Chief Chisunka of the Ushi people of Luapula Province has welcomed the delimitation of constituencies ahead of the August general elections, stating that smaller electoral areas would promote adequate public resources and development closer to rural communities.
Chief Chisunka says his support for the delimitation exercise aligns with a broader push to ensure that constituency boundaries are updated to reflect population growth and improved administrative efficiency.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, the chief said the exercise will delimit large constituencies to small units in order to accelerate development and improve the provision of social services, including access to the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
Chief Chisunka, who is Luapula Council of Chiefs Chairperson, acknowledged that the delimitation process will help to resolve such issues.
“Delimitation is a good move to cut constituencies that are big. Public resources will easily be distributed and administered to our doorsteps,” Dr Chisunka said.
He observed that the exercise is crucial for accelerating development, as it aligns with the government’s aim to manage constituencies.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia has indicated that 70 new constituency boundaries will be gazetted on April 15, 2026, and will take effect on May 15, 2026, after the dissolution of Parliament.
Currently, the commission is conducting consultative talks with stakeholders in districts over the delimitation exercise from February 16 to February 20, 2026.
