Copperbelt Public Health Specialist, Christopher Dube has called on health practitioners to educate teenagers on the importance of practicing abstinence.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, Dr Dube said taking contraceptives might result in infertility especially amongst teenagers, hence the need for them to be educated.
He said health practitioners should invest in counseling teenagers to prevent them from having complications that may come with contraceptives.
He noted that contraceptives are meant for women who are on family planning not teenagers as it is affecting their health.
Dr. Dube said contraceptives are meant for family planning and not for children to be abusing the drugs to satisfy their sexual desire.
“We have a policy as the Ministry Of Health that guides us who should receive the contraceptives and not just any person that is not of the right age” he said.
He said that teenage pregnancies can be prevented through counselling rather than giving contraceptives that may lead to other diseases.
“Contraceptives may cause an increase in hormonal imbalance that may lead to fertility challenges” he said.
